Bible

Horizon Christian High School offers a four-year Bible program. Over the course of the four years, a broad range of topics will be discussed.

 

English

All freshmen will be enrolled in English 9. The English series will include four key components: literature, grammar, composition and reading. Students will develop their reading and writing skills through several modes of writing and exposure to different literary forms. Readings will include short stories, poetry, novels and a Shakespearean play. The Passport system will be used to strengthen reading and comprehension skills. This computer-based program will be an integral part of the curriculum. English 9 will integrate biblical concepts throughout the course and will focus on biblical traits and Godly precepts when analyzing all forms of literature.

 

English 10

English 10 will serve to strengthen student knowledge of the various elements of literature as well as grammar and composition skills. Students will improve their writing techniques and styles. English 10 will focus on poetry, non-fiction, drama and short stories. Student writing will include personal, descriptive, narrative, expository and persuasive styles. The Passport system will be used to strengthen reading and comprehension skills. This computer-based program will be used in the classroom weekly. Biblical integration throughout the course will be a priority.

 

English 11

English 11 explores American literature from 1607 to the present. Students will be exposed to essays, personal narratives, short stories, poetry and novels. The philosophical effects of Puritanism, Denims, Romanticism, Transcendentalism, Naturalism, Modernism, Existentialism and Postmodernism on language and literature will be explored and critically analyzed through the lens of Christian worldview. Writing and grammar will continue to receive emphasis in English 11. Students will participate in several modes of writing primarily focusing on thesis and essay development and the completion of a junior research paper. Students will also have opportunity for oral presentations and debate.

Fine Art

Survey of art techniques and mediums: This class will include painting, drawing and sculpting. This course can be taken as a semester class or a year long class.

Music

Come join the horizon Christian High School choir. This course will offer students the chance to share their gifts as well as develop the gift God has given.

 

Foreign Language

Spanish I

This class is an introduction to Spanish. The focus of this year long course is listening, speaking, reading and writing with primary emphasis on speaking the language. The course will utilize videos, CD's and individual student workbooks. Students will also be introduced to the history, art and overall multi-culture of the Spanish speaking people. Students will learn Bible verses in Spanish and will also focus on sharing the plan of salvation to others in Spanish.

Spanish II

Spanish II will continue to focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening to Spanish. This course will also cover areas such as traveling, eating out, shopping, celebrations and professions. Students will be exposed to art, history and culture of the Latino people. Students will also participate in memory of Bible verses in Spanish and look at topics relevant to missionaries in Spanish speaking countries.

Health 

Health I

This course will focus on physical, mental, social and spiritual health. Emphasis is placed on the intricacies of the human body and how to engage in a healthy lifestyle. Students will confront the secular view with a Christian worldview of our bodies and a healthy lifestyle.

 

Physical Education

In Physical Education, students will demonstrate knowledge of a variety of motor skills, understand and apply movement concepts, understand rules and strategies for a variety of physical activities. Students will also demonstrate knowledge of a physical active lifestyle and recognize the importance of caring for the body that God has created.

 

Mathematics

Practical Mathematics/Integrated Math I

This course is a two-year sequence of applied mathematics. This class will focus on mathematic skills used daily in life and in running a business. Topics will also include credit, checking and savings accounts, basic purchases with tax and tip, housing, taxes, automobile expenses, personal finance, investments, debt management, retirement planning, probability and future jobs/careers.

Practical Mathematics/Integrated Math II

This course builds on topics presented in the first course. It reviews basic computation skills and then builds on these skills by introducing topics such as basic life survival skills and consumer topics. This series is based on real-life experiences and therefore topics are engaging and relevant to students.

Algebra I

Algebra includes solving and graphing linear equations, functions and inequalities, solving equations with two variables, exponential and quadratic functions, radicals and rational functions. This 2007 text utilizes Animated Algebra through classzone.com providing students with interactive problems for an engaging math experience.

Geometry

This course will cover points, lines and planes, triangles, figures in plane, circles and measurements. As with the Algebra text, this text also utilizes classzone.com allowing for 3-D activities, interactive problems to solve and @hometutor, for problem solving help at home.

Algebra II

Algebra II is an advanced algebra class focusing on linear equations, inequalities, functions and systems, quadratic, polynomials, radical functions, other nonlinear functions and relations, probability, data analysis, discrete math, and trigonometry. This text offers @hometutor for help at home as well as chapter prerequisite skill practice. Additionally, the Animated Algebra component at classzone.com offers excellent illustrations and is a great hands-on learning tool.

Pre-Calculus

This top level math course will provide students with the opportunity to challenge themselves. Pre-calculus includes the coverage of pre-calculus topics as well as discrete mathematics and data analysis. The text offers classzon.com for student help and online interactive problems.

Calculus

 

 

Science

Physical Science

Physical science will cover energy and motion, electricity and energy resources, energy on the move, and the nature and diversity of matter. Students will learn about the world around them and marvel at God's handiwork. Laboratory exercises will accompany each unity providing students with practical experience using the scientific method. Current issues to be considered may include such topics as oil exploration and alternative energy resources.

Biology

In Biology, students will experience His glory first hand as we explore the beauty and intelligence inherent in God's living created world. The course will cover cell structure and function, the intricacies of genetics and DNA, bacteria and viruses, protists and fungi, plants and animals; we will talk about Ecology, the human body and how living things change within limits and adapt over time. We will also discus current issues such as cancer, genetic cloning and potential effects of global warming all within the framework of a Christian worldview. We will examine the claims of evolution and the evidence for and against the theory. Similarly, we will examine creation (intelligent design) and the evidence for and against this "theory." Laboratory exercises will accompany each unity providing students with practical experience using the scientific method.

 

Chemistry

This course will be offered in one of the three formats, depending upon enrollment. Option one is a traditional classroom and lab format. The second option is utilizing the LINC system through Bob Jones Academy. The LINC system is an interactive format in which students will meet in a conference room with a TV screen and phone link to an experienced chemistry teacher at Bob Jones Academy. Students will listen to instruction, solve problems and participate in virtual lab activities. This format offers students the opportunity to speak directly to the teacher allowing for questions to be addressed. This course will utilize both the chemistry textbook and lab workbook published by Bob Jones University Press. This course will also focus on biblical integration of subject knowledge and God's word. Regardless of what format is chosen biblical integration will be an integral part of the course.

Physics

This course will give an overview of the physical properties of matter and the fundamental laws that govern the universe. Topics will include reviews of electricity, gravity, light and wave theory. Due to the math required in this course, students that have not completed Algebra II will need to discuss placement in this course to ensure appropriate placement.

 

Social Studies

World History

World History is a 9th grade course that emphasizes a Christian worldview regarding major events since the beginning of time. Students will be introduced to the social sciences as a method of investigating and understanding how the world has developed politically, economically, and socially while contrasting this form of secular thinking with Christian theology. Creation, fall and redemption are major ideas that run throughout history and students will be encouraged to apply these concepts to the history of God's unfolding plan.

 

Economics

This introductory course will serve to build a solid foundation in Economics. The course will explore micro and macroeconomics including cause and effect of supply and demand curves and the interaction between the U.U. government and international economies. Capitalism will be compared and contrasted with foreign economies. Students will learn through hands-on economic lab activities that include setting up a business, creating advertisements, creating a budget, and buying a new car. As they work through the subject matter, students will also learn God's viewpoint in economic responsibility.

Government

This one semester course encompasses the foundations of our government, the individual branches of federal and state government, constitutional freedom and how citizens can participate in their government. This course will also explain the role of the American government in global concerns. Students will learn how to analyze and interpret data as well as read about landmark cases that have influenced history. Students will also study the foundations of our government through the lens of the Bible.

 

U.S. History

This junior level course is a comprehensive survey of United States history. This course is intended to give junior students a solid foundation of knowledge about the heritage of our country. As students move through each historic period and learn about the lives of others, they will do so in the light of Scripture.
